A Linux problem.....
« on: June 20, 2007, 05:57:35 PM »

Well, as is says on my sig, I use openSUSE Linux, but not as frequently as I wish I could. Anyway, I need to install crap so I can compile and install programs. But, it doesn't come default, and I didn't install them during the install process, and every time I download the packages I need, they're either a tarball and require other packages to install themselves, or they just don't have a configure file or a makefile and I don't know what to do. Is there any easy thing I can do to get them, or do I have to install it all over again?

Technically, it's still a problem. I installed RealPlayer, but there are still all the other apps I want to install from source. Smiley

yeah, you also might try learning to use the command prompt for, um, well, here's the thing, I tried this for zenwalk linux which is based on slackware, so idk if the packages are nammed the same?  But it has a thing called "xnetpkg" and with the command prompt it has commands  that let you dl all new versions an Internet Repository, and list the ones you have installed already.  Stuff like that.  I know that's not exactly the answer you where looking for, but it's a concept. (it seems rarely do linux questions get exact answers, unless the distro has a really good support forum, which is usually your best bet.  But it's always fun to throw snowballs.  Oh and jumping in piles of leaves, the best.

Nah, but openSUSE has its own package management system called YaST, which i cant use because it requires certain files to install the packages. Luckily, i was able to find a binary installer for realplayer, which solved my problem.

I've tried zenwalk linux, but I didn't know it. Also, its the terminal not the command prompt :p

Thanks for the help though Smiley

I installed Linux... Now what? I've got the wired internet working. But I can't configure the wireless. And I'm trying to compile xchat so I can use IRC but I can't figure that one out either.

edit: I figured out xchat. But wireless connection, not so much.

Wireless connections on Linux are notoriously difficult to set up.  For the simple fact 90% of cards don't have drivers.

What kind of card do you have?

I just figured it out. It involved some fancy finger work on the keyboard. I should be fine. My next goal is to get a good IRC client. xchat is kinda suck linux. Well at least the version I have.
